Dr. Joann Halpern is the director of the German Center for Research and Innovation (GCRI) in New York City and an adjunct professor of international education at New York University. Before she joined GCRI, Dr. Halpern was the director of academic affairs and senior studies and professor of international education at Global College of Long Island University. From 1996-2001 she was the director of international programs at Hochschule Harz in Wernigerode, Germany. Dr. Halpern also co-founded Knowledge Transfer Beyond Boundaries, an NGO with projects in Cameroon, Nigeria, Yemen, and Antigua.
Halpern received her bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College, her master’s degree from Harvard University, and her Ph.D. from New York University. She has taught courses in global studies, international education, intercultural communication, business English, ESL, German, and English at universities in the United States (Harvard University, Dartmouth College, New York University, Long Island University) and in Germany (Universität Magdeburg and Hochschule Harz). She is a recipient of the Harvard Award for Distinction in Teaching as well as fellowships from the Fulbright Association, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Robert Bosch Stiftung, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. She serves on the advisory boards of the TU Dortmund, University Alliance Ruhr, the German Accelerator, and LIU Global.
